The boot cut jean became popular in the mid 1990s, when all things grunge were taking over and heavy boots were all the rage. Named for their purpose, boot cut (sometimes spelt as one word, bootcut) jeans flare between the knee and the ankle so that the trousers don’t bunch up when you’re wearing boots. Though denim is the most popular fabric for boot cut trousers, other materials are often used - particularly leather, suede and corduroy. Also trendy for 2007 are boot cut trousers made from denim with suede accents at the waist or down the legs.
Boot cut trousers are popular with women because they’re more flattering to a full figure than most other cuts of denim – the flare at the bottom draws attention away from the waist and makes the leg look a little longer, providing balance to fuller thighs or thick hips. This effect is at it’s best with black denim, and other dark washes.
Most of the top brands make boot cut jeans, some of the most popular are Levis, 7 for All Mankind, Ben Sherman, Tommy Hilfiger, St George by Duffer, Red Herring, Calvin Klein and J Jeans. Arguably, the most trendy boot cut jeans this season are the Cali by Juicy Couture; similarly, the most popular ‘classic’ boot cut jeans are the Levis 512 and 529. Boot cut jeans are available in most high street clothing shops, but for the best selection check out major department stores like Next.
If you’re looking for discounts on the most fashionable boot cut jeans, look online. The big name labels almost always run their own online shops, and usually have at least part of any given range on sale. When considering boot cut jeans online, it’s a good idea to stop by a shop and try a pair on so you’re sure the cut suits your shape and style.
