Among the more faddish fabrics, corduroy is made up of twisted fibers forming a distinct cord-like pattern in the finished cloth. Most corduroy made today has an alternating pattern – a tufted cord and a bare channel – that creates a velvety ridged effect in the fabric. As material goes, corduroy is considered quite durable, which is why it is popular for making trousers. Most of the leading jeans designers craft a few styles using corduroy rather than denim. Though corduroy is still thought of as a casual fabric, many people feel it’s more appropriate for wearing to work than denim.
Cords are available from a number of popular fashion designers, and most often for sale in leading department stores in the autumn and winter months. This is because cord trousers are a bit heavy for the warmer months, and few designers produce lightweight cord trousers or cropped-length cords. Whether it’s Debenhams or John Lewis, odds are a department store near you will have cord trousers for sale. Cords are available online from a number of retailers, depending on what quality and style you’re looking for.
Because corduroy is a durable fabric, it’s popular for making children’s trousers. Designers making cord trousers for children include Burberry, Benetton, MiniMan, Catimini and Mayoral. Big names in cords for men and women are Burberry, Emporio Armani, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Racing Green. The most popular jeans styles are often available from leading designers in cord fabric, so have a good look around if you’re after something special.
Shopping for cords online is fairly straight forward, though the selection of styles dates quickly and is often limited on a seasonal basis. When buying cords online, be sure to choose an online retailer with a good reputation and a clear returns policy to avoid disappointment. Also, be mindful of the shipping charges and/or handling fees as often these can negate the money saved by shopping online.
