The up-and-coming trend in denim for 2007 is the wide leg jean. Fashion trend setters like Kate Moss and Lindsay Lohan have been spotted wearing the next big thing – jeans with wider, baggier legs. The jeans were first made popular in the late 1990s as part of the alternative fashion movement for young men. Though initially associated with street style, the wide leg has also proven popular with followers of rave, skate and hip hop fashion.
“Wide leg” isn’t just a modern word for the bell bottoms that were popular in the 60s and 70s. The difference is simple: bell bottom jeans are narrow at the top, usually tight fitting at the thigh and gradually widening until the bottom of the leg; wide leg jeans, however, are a uniform width right the way down. Typical wide leg jeans have legs at least 20-inches around – obviously larger jeans have wider legs.
Back in the 90s, the leader of the pack in wide leg jeans was JNCO – a specialty clothing company established in 1985 by Milo and Jacques Revah. Today, wide leg jeans are produced by nearly all the popular designer jeans labels. Wide leg jeans often feature graffiti screens and embroidered detail as well as over-sized back pockets. JNCO jeans are now a popular find in the vintage denim shops. Current trends in wide-leg jeans include the light-weight Levi’s 99, Hudson’s high-waisted wide leg jeans and Seven’s Farah jeans.
As with most online clothing purchases, it’s important to know what you’re getting into before buying your wide-leg jeans. So, stop in to a trendy shop in your local high street, or even an upscale department store to try out a few pairs of wide leg jeans so you can see which designer makes a style that’s most flattering for you.© Designer Jeans.org.uk 2006
